BAM

Took the bus to Berkeley and went to the Berkeley Art Museum.  Saw an awesome exhibition called CREATE. All work by persons with disabilities working in 3 different workshops in the area. The exhibition included sculptures by Judith Scott.  I was excited to see these. There is something about them that makes you want to hug the pieces. Also in the show was a huge and super cool piece written on the wall by Michael Bernard Loggins.  It was a list of 100 things he fears in life, most I fear too. Example: Fear of time bombs. Sculptures made out of paper and tape by Jeremy Burleson were totally inspiring. A pile of paper syringes, what the hell? So rad. A simple reminder of the power of minimal materials and super creativity. Weird wood block prints of wormy fish things with teeth by Bertha Otoya were monstrous and kinda creepy. Lots of the work included repetitive handwriting and list making. I liked the anything goes attitude of the work, materials were varied and combined in interesting ways. Many layers both conceptually and physically. I thought it was a very respectful showing of outsider artist's work. Photos were not allowed, only architectural shots.  I took a photo of the art you can climb on on the lower level. I don't remember the artist's name. It looks fun but no one was climbing on it.  The architecture is very industrial and open. It is a concrete and steel exposed structure and there are several platforms jutting out into the center space. You travel up a ramp to move from gallery to gallery until you reach the top. A good break from art making, back tot he studio tomorrow.
